VICTORIAN GY OPEN
WAGON –
PROTOTYPE OVERVIEW
The ubiquitous 22 ton capacity GY 4-wheel
open wagons were constructed for the Victorian Railways between
1939 and 1958. In all, 6320 wagons were built. Just over half of
these wagons were built at the Victorian Railways Newport,
Ballarat & Bendigo Workshops, while the balance were built by A
E Goodwin, Pressed Steel Co England, Bermingham England and
Metro Cammel England. The last of the GY wagons was removed
from revenue service in the late 1980’s.
These wagons were seen on all railway
tracks in Victoria, mainlines and branchlines alike. They were
used for grain haulage together with the haulage of general
freight. It is reported that with bulk grain trains, they would
often work in rakes of up to 73 hoppers. A tarpaulin would
frequently be used to cover the load.
When the GY wagons were built, they were
painted in VR Wagon Red. From around 1948, a diagonal yellow
stripe was applied to the corners of GY wagons to differentiate
them from HY wagons (which were not grain-proofed). From 1969,
the GY wagons were repainted into an all yellow livery.
Representatives painted in VR Wagon Red lasted until the late
1970’s.
