VICTORIAN P CLASS LOCOMOTIVE – EXTRA MODEL PHOTOS

VICTORIAN P CLASS LOCOMOTIVE – PROTOTYPE OVERVIEW

In the early 1980s the Victorian Government announced a major program to modernise rail country passenger services.  In addition to the construction of new 3 car N sets and B class rebuilds into A class locomotives for the long distance services, a number of Harris suburban  trailer cars were also refurbished for loco hauled interurban services.  To haul these new 3 car H sets 13 first series “flat top” T class were extensively rebuilt into P class locomotives.

Rebuilt by Clyde Engineering subsidiary Martin and King at their Somerton plant, the P class were fitted with an 820kW engine replacing the original 710kW unit.  In addition, a diesel generator head-end power (HEP) unit was fitted to provide power for the H car set’s air conditioning and lighting needs.  Further enhancements including cab air-conditioning and modernised electrical systems were incorporated within a new cab and body design.  Rebuild details are:

Whilst primarily designed for hauling a single 3 car H car set, in their early days they could also be occasionally seen hauling wooden bodied red and blue car sets.  In March 1986 tests were conducted using double H car sets with a P class at each end operating in push-pull mode.  This working, with the two locomotives connected via cabling through the coupled H car sets, removed the need for locos to run around a consist at the end of their trip, the crew simply changing ends for the return working.  Following the test workings this arrangement was then introduced on some Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh services, as well as football and special event trains.  In an effort to meet increasing demand, during August 1987 some H car sets where increased to 4 cars, this being the maximum capacity for the P class.

Whilst primarily designed for their passenger workings, available units were also often seen on routine short to medium distance country freight services as well as suburban goods workings.  During the 1990s P class were regularly rostered on Goulburn Valley freights to Mooroopna and Tocumwal where their HEP unit was used for refrigerated containers.

In the mid 90s a new larger radiator for the HEP were fitted to most of the class.  This improvement resulted in a box arrangement fitted under the HEP cooling fan to accommodate the new unit.  This and the fitting of full length handrails along the long hood during the mid 2000s are the only visual modifications to the P class.

Over the years the class has been painted in a number of liveries.  All units were delivered in the then new V/Line orange and grey scheme.  This livery was superseded by the Mk1 V/Line Pass Red/White/Blue scheme and in 1997 locomotives P11 and P15 were repainted in this new livery.  In the early 2000s this scheme was updated with a new  Mk2 version comprising a stylised V/Line insignia.  Commencing from around 2003, P class units 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18 were repainted in this version.  During 2008 a new Red/Yellow/Grey V/Line Pass livery was introduced to the locomotive fleet and in 2010 P11 was the first of the class to receive this scheme, followed by P12 in 2011 and P15 during 2012.

During 1999 V/Line Freight was privatised and sold off with Freight Victoria being the successful bidder.  The sale assets included P19, P20, P21, P22 and P23.  With contracts being gained interstate, in March 2000 Freight Victoria changed their name to Freight Australia.  The new corporation introduced a new livery of green and yellow and by 2002 all five P class had been repainted.  In 2004 Freight Australia was sold to Pacific National, however it would be a number of years before the Freight Australia insignia was removed and replaced with Pacific National signage on the green and yellow livery.

As at the start of 2014 all eight V/Line Pass units remain in service.  Under Pacific National, four of the five units have been withdrawn - P19, P21 and P23 during 2008 and P22 in 2013 – leaving only P20 operative.
